Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar is credited with standardising the modern Carnatic concert format — the sequence of Varnam, Kritis, Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi, and Thukada that every concert follows today. Before Ariyakudi, concerts were informal and unstructured. He brought discipline, pacing, and aesthetic coherence to the concert stage. His voice was rich and his scholarship deep. He was also a prolific composer and a revered teacher whose disciples include many of the 20th century's greatest musicians.
