About this Raga
Salagam begins the Prati Madhyama half of the Melakarta system. The raga combines R1–G1 with M2, creating a dense and somewhat austere tonal atmosphere. Because the swaras occur very close together in pitch, the raga can sound abstract if rendered purely as a scale. However, with careful phrase development and gamaka treatment, Salagam reveals a distinctive and serious melodic personality. The raga tends to evoke introspection and restraint.
