Haṃsānādham is a bright, "ringing" Audava-Audava (pentatonic) raga, a Janya of the 53rd Melakarta Gamanaśrama. It omits both Gandharam (G) and Dhaivatam (D), giving it an open, majestic quality. Historically it was a Shaḍava raga (6 notes) that included the vivadi note Shatsruti Dhaivatam (D₃), but in contemporary practice it has evolved into a stable, symmetric 5-note scale. It is a very popular raga for instrumental music, especially Flute and Mandolin. The key distinction from Amarasenapriya is historical: Haṃsānādham is a mainstream raga with a vast kriti corpus that simplified from 6 to 5 notes over the 20th century.
